Pizza Margertia at V Lounge, Honolulu, Hawai‘i, originally uploaded by Aaron Landry.

The V Lounge in Honolulu is tucked away near the largest open-air shopping center in the world and on the other end of a popular night club run by a group of nightlife scenesters. Inside is a couple dart boards, bar-style seating and a few couches. The food menu contains only one thing: Neapolitan-style pizza.

The menu is so concise it almost mirrored that of Una Pizza Napoletana. Both V Lounge and Una Pizza's menus contained just four pizzas but V Lounge has a "build your own" and Una Pizza has "no substitutions or alterations." Recently V Lounge ranked first in a recent Honolulu pizza crawl. I ordered the Margherita.

The oven is wood-fired, the ingredients are on par with Italian standards including imported 00 Caputo flour and mozzarella di Bufala. An exclusive offering considering how distant Hawai‘i is from everywhere else.

While sitting at the bar, service was fast and my pizza arrived hot. Almost no char on the bottom and the crust was much thicker than most Neapolitan-style pies I've had. The best adjective I could come up with was "puffy." On paper, this is a Neapolitan-style pizza. In tasting, it's a thick, chewy and cheesy. Neapolitan-style should leave you satisfied but not heavy -- this pie I couldn't finish.

Really, it's not bad however, and for $12 in Hawai‘i, this is a good deal. Surprised there weren't more people here on a Saturday evening. Perhaps the party starts later -- they're open daily until 4 AM.
