Harvey - North Saint Paul

(Post originally on Minnesota Meow)

Name: Harvey
Nicknames: Mister H, Baby Butt
Born: Early 2003
Lives in: North Saint Paul
Lives with: Amy Jo and Casey Armstrong

When Harvey was a kitten he was found at a pet store by someone and given as a surprise gift to Amy Jo’s good friend Chrissy. Unfortunately, as Chrissy had to go back to the dorms at Saint Cloud State University that autumn, Chrissy pleaded to let Harvey live with Amy Jo. They’ve been together since. Harvey’s lived in Shoreview, White Bear Lake (where he became obese), Hudson, WI (where he lost all the weight) and now he lives happily in North Saint Paul with both Amy Jo and Casey.

A peculiar part of Harvey is his tail; it has a strange bend at the end. If you pet him and run your hand down his tail the last bone isn’t straight and leans off to one side. It’s quite strange. When Harvey was a kitten it wasn’t very notable but now as an adult cat you can tell when he stretches out or walks with his tail in the air. Casey has joked that sometimes it seems like Harvey likes to extend his tail in the air in effort to straighten it.

Harvey also lives with Audrey, a male cat with a female name. Harvey was the more dominant cat and used to beat up on Audrey on a regular basis. They now have calmed down and get along great.

Harvey eats raw food such as cans of tuna fish and frozen vegetables. He’s on a strict diet of one meal a day in the evening.

He periodically rebels against this diet. Amy told me a story:

When I came home the other day, I found a mug that that Casey had left on the counter with stew in it broken on the floor and all the stew gone. That mug was a wedding gift. I then went in the cupboard to find a doughnut. I knew there were three left. The donut container was closed but there was a hole ripped on the top and the doughnuts were gone.

Although it may be unfair to blame Harvey for this matter with no substantial proof, the facts tend to point in his direction.

Harvey has a lot of personality and is sharp as a tack but plays off that he’s dumb… as if he doesn’t know better when he’s getting himself in trouble.

A few weeks ago, overnight Harvey and Audrey opened up a kitchen cabinet and emptied out three 5 pound bags of flour and a bag of crêpe mix. They ate a lot of it, but the rest of it was spread all around the entire kitchen and they made art out of it. Their paws “up to their cat knees” were powdery white.

Casey said that Harvey’s favorite place to lay is on top of the water heater.

Amy Jo added that at night when he’s a good cat he “likes to sleep under the covers like a little man. He’ll tuck himself in. I don’t know how he does it.”

Amy Jo is a bookkeeper and Casey works in IT for a local group of natural food stores. Casey also writes Casey’s Beer Blog.

Minneapolis City Council Member Gary Schiff on Halloween

Pretty spooky. Gary Schiff was stuck in the 70’s, but later his mustache wasn’t sticking.

Captured during the live broadcast of the Ways & Means/Budget Hearing during a discussion regarding Meet Minneapolis as well as the funding of Wireless Minneapolis and Minneapolis Television Network.

Nadia - Cooper, Minneapolis

(Post originally from Minnesota Meow)

Name: Nadia
Nicknames: Nad, Meow
Born: October 2001
Lives in: Cooper, Minneapolis
Lives with: Aaron Landry and Allen Effenberger

Nadia was a feral cat that was found during a rain storm when she was a tiny kitten near Withrow. Nadia was with other cats in her litter and her mother. As it was going to freeze that night and these cats were trapping themselves under a culvert, Aaron’s sister was determined to try to save them. She was only able to save one of them. The rest of the cats haven’t been seen since.

When Nadia was a small kitten she was very skittish and shy. She wasn’t very playful and did not like to be held. Now as an adult cat she is still shy but can generally be approached. She’s the type of cat that’ll come sit on one’s lap but won’t let you put her there. She’ll waste most of the day on naps in her “cat spot” near a bedroom window.

She actively enjoys lasers and a long rainbow string. She lounges in the sun, watches birds and squirrels outside and infrequently goes outside. A visit outdoors usually consists of hiding under the back porch. Sometimes she’ll run a few houses away to get everyone worried and then casually walks home.

Nadia lives with Aaron who is runs Minnesota Meow. He’s an online media guru at night and by day is the IT Manager for Go East in Saint Paul. He’s also a private pilot, amateur photographer, pianist and restless adventurer.

Nadia also lives with roommate Allen Effenberger who is a baritone with the Minnesota Chorale and a student and assistant instructor at East-West Karate.

Bon Iver and DeYarmond Edison at the Nucleus

Bon Iver, originally uploaded by s4xton.

Kyle from Reveille Magazine and I took an after-work day-trip to Eau Claire, Wisconsin to see Justin Vernon aka Bon Iver at The Nucleus last night. It was a hometown reunion show for DeYarmond Edison where Justin was a member. In addition to Bon Iver, opening was Megafaun, which comprises of the members of DeYarmond Edison sans Justin Vernon. So all and all, a very close group.

Racys and the Nucleus is essentially a small restaurant, a small café and a tiny music venue under the same roof. When we arrived around 8pm the show was already sold out. We watched some of Megafaun through the door until we were able to get escorted in.

Bon Iver’s set was intimate, emotional and personal. Here in Eau Claire he was playing to an overcapacity room of long time fans, friends and family. He played from For Emma, Forever Ago and a cover of “Satisfied Mind.” He brought up the folks from Megafaun to back him on the last part of his set ending with “The Wolves” where the crowd sang the backing vocals at Justin’s direction. I was amazed it all came off even better than the album.

DeYarmond Edison played a few pieces on stage and then went into the middle of the room where a large microphone was set up and played acoustically for the rest of the night. They called for more and more crowd participation until the last piece where the band spread out to different parts of the room and everyone sang together. The band dubbed us all the “Eau Claire Choir.”

Kyle thought it quite possibly be his favorite show all year and I can’t agree more. On our way out we nabbed tickets for the Land of Talk show at The Nucleus where Bon Iver will be opening on Tuesday, November 6th. We figured this was well worth the trip and we’re ready to do it again. Justin joked on stage about Land of Talk that “They’re from Montréal. That’s in another country. This might be an Eau Claire first!”

Reveille this week has an interview with Bon Iver and he’ll be playing tonight with Megafaun and Digitata at the Uptown Bar tonight, October 26.

FedEx via Budget Rent a Car

FedEx via Budget Rent a Car, originally uploaded by s4xton.

I’ve had a bunch of problems receiving a package where it required a signature in person and they wouldn’t leave it for pickup anywhere. It forced me to work from home today and what showed up around 13:00 was a FedEx delivery guy driving a rental truck. What the heck?

UPDATE: From the comments, Alexis writes:

FedEx Home Delivery drivers technically buy their own trucks; they pay the company to provide them with a company vehicle. I’m assuming that if the truck breaks down, the drivers are responsible for a formidable substitute.

PayPal Security Key

Keys, originally uploaded by s4xton.

I use my PayPal account rather heavily so when I found out about the PayPal Security Key, I snatched one up right away. It’s only five bucks shipped and out of the box it leads you to set up your PayPal account with it in one step. It further points you to where you can use it with your eBay account in one more step.

I posted this photo because I was unsure of the size of the device before I got it. I was hoping it would be about the size of a standard key but it’s a tad larger. The hole for the key ring is also a little small but it includes a tiny bit for it to comfortably ride on a keychain.

Using the key is easy. Normally the device displays nothing. Press the button to get a number. When you submit your username and password in to PayPal or eBay it will give you a second step to put in the six digit number. You can also simply put the six digit number at the end of your password to save a step. The number changes every thirty seconds or so.

I was pleasantly surprised to I find out that this key is not just a PayPal and eBay device with a VeriSign stamp on it but it’s actually an RSA SecurID device that’s fully part of VeriSign Identity Protection. This means this key can be used for a whole number of sites especially being that VeriSign is also an OpenID provider. A bit more searching lead me to cavemonkey50.com with a list of a bunch of different OpenID opportunities that could be used with this Security Key if you have your OpenID account with VeriSign Labs’ Personal Identity Provider with your key bound to it.

Right now it’s only five bucks. So far I think it’s a pretty good deal.

Sean and Stephanie’s Wedding

Last weekend I attended Sean and Stephanie’s wedding in sunny Waupaca, Wisconsin. One of the highlights was the interruption of a child during the vows which was thankfully captured on video by someone and put on YouTube:

Ain’t it the truth, ain’t it the truth!

Congratulations Sean and Stephanie!

Wildcat Wednesdays

Nadia, originally uploaded by s4xton.

My cat, Nadia, was a feral cat rescued from freezing conditions by my sister when it was a little kitten. Being it was Nadia’s sixth birthday this weekend I figured I should post on her behalf on an issue that may concern her if she thought about things other than food and what’s going on outside the window.

Wildcat Wednesdays is a program by Animal Ark, St. Paul Animal Control and the District 7 Planning Council where volunteers catch feral cats, give them up to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated for Rabies and marked (PDF), care for them as they recover and then release them back into the wild. Right now it’s only in Saint Paul’s District 7 (PDF).

I noticed an interesting statistic in the Pioneer Press article ‘Wildcat Wednesdays’ has alternative approach to feral cat control:

Organizers launched the program Sept. 26 and hope to expand it beyond District 7. So far, it has netted 17 feral cats.

That doesn’t sound like much compared to the estimated 300,000 to 1 million feral cats in the Twin Cities, but program boosters say it is a good start.

It doesn’t sound like they know how many feral cats there are out there either but 300,000 is their low number? And there might be a million? That would be at least one feral cat for every three people. Where are all these cats?

In a WCCO report about Wildcat Wednesdays, “Gene” without a last name got four free traps and nabbed two cats. I guess Frogtown has a lot more cats compared to my neighborhood.

Ethically I think the program is great and better than euthanizing them but I’m not sure how much this will impact will make if all of this work goes into just getting a tiny fraction of a percentage of the cats out there. Mike Fry, executive director of Animal Ark said that “TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) is not only more humane, it is more effective and more cost effective.” He elaborates in the Pioneer Press:

Fry said killing feral cats - the city’s policy before Sept. 26 - did nothing to diminish the population.

“Lethal means are always unsuccessful; you can’t kill them fast enough,” he said, especially in a neighborhood like Frogtown, where a high number of rentals and vacant buildings has resulted in plenty of habitat for abandoned cats.

Feral cats form colonies, Fry explained, and such factors as food supply determine a colony’s size. Killing a cat only made room for another cat.

Taking away a colony’s ability to multiply shrinks it over time.

If you’d like to learn more, participate or donate to the program, check out the Wildcat Wednesdays PDF provided by Saint Paul Animal Control.

On a related note, I contribute a small amount yearly to Feline Rescue, which is another no-kill cat shelter in Saint Paul. Another group worth supporting.

My Gnome!

For Christmas one year, my sister gave me a gnome which I put in front of my house. After a year or so, he became faded and aged so my aunt Laura in February of this year freshened him up to a condition that was even better than when I originally met him.

Then I had a party and he mysteriously (well, presumably) left with someone. While digging through photos from the pillow fight yesterday I decided to click on the WCCO tag on Flickr which lead me to my gnome wandering around the WCCO studios with Mark Rosen and Don Shelby! What the heck?

I then found that Aaron’s Lawn Gnome has a blog. He recently visited Glockenspiel, visited some of his relatives in Dawson and saw Olivia, Minnesota where I just was a couple months ago.

I almost started crying! I miss my gnome a lot but I’m glad he’s taking a little tour and not being gnomenapped by some 16-year-olds in my neighborhood like I thought may have happened.

This is fantastic. Whoever is all helping my gnome get around safely are great people. A friend of my gnome is a friend of mine. Now I need to catch up with my gnome…

UPDATE: From my gnome’s Flickr page you can see the Stoop Group he created as well as some of his favorites. ROFL.

P.S. If you’re commenting with an obnoxious name, fake email address and pointing to a domain registration service, I’m going to treat the comment like spam even if it is coming from a computer using Qwest in Minneapolis.
