Pioneer Press to Launch “e-paper.”

Julio Ojeda-Zapata writes that the Pioneer Press “will soon offer an e-edition of the paper that looks just like the dead-tree version.”

The e-edition will be available at a special introductory subscription rate, with seven-day delivery over 26 weeks for $26.65, or 52 weeks for $53.30.

This is interesting for a number of reasons. They’re going to start charing for what’s already free on their website but in a digital format that only makes sense on paper. Presumably, you’ll now be able to pay a premium to have a format that less searchable, doesn’t get corrected or updated the same way a normal paper doesn’t and ultimately cannot be linked to or aggregated. You’ll have news in a format that’s probably just as isolated and contained as the paper version.

I’ve never perused such an e-paper (there are others) but I’m told it’s designed for easy navigation from page to page and section to section. A 30-day search and easy-on-the-eyes features are part of the deal — which isn’t free (sorry).

Well, we’ll see. You can do a search on the website the way it is now. And why don’t they implement the easy-on-the-eyes features on twincities.com?

I may not understand their strategy, but my guess is that they’re aiming at a market of people that want the paper version of the Pioneer Press that aren’t comfortable with using the twincities.com website to get their news. If that’s the case, this is not the right solution to the problem, IMHO. Perhaps I’m living in a bubble but I can’t think of anyone that would want to pay for this.

Arsenic Pollution in South Minneapolis

Ed Kohler this afternoon posted the best write-up I’ve seen of the Arsenic Pollution issue in South Minneapolis. I’ve known about this since the time I was buying my home here but haven’t dug too deeply. If you live around here, it’s a good read and has a bunch of informative links. [link]

Bo Hakala

Need an awesome cinematographer? I just finished making a site for my good friend Bo Hakala. Check it out at bohakala.com. The above photo is the mild celebration right after we launched it.

Bo was also recently profiled in We Are Digging For Fire.

Autumn Party

Fire, originally uploaded by kittykatlounge.

If you didn’t know, I had a party this weekend.

Special thanks to everyone that brought all the beer, wine, ούζο, sour balls, cookies, stuff to burn and other stuffs. Yum. When it all ended at 4:30am, there was only a few shots of liquor, three cans of beer and one bottle of cider left. Perfect.

Also thanks to everyone that helped out! Everything from the ever-important hammer responsibility, pallet busting, fire pit maintenance (and burning all the stuff under it), the fantastic fire throwing, last-minute DJ responsibilities, scooter rides down the sidewalk, the impromptu music performances, the burning of one’s own dress, keeping my cat calm and picking up and taking away a bunch of the used bottles to the tolerating of the neighbor that crashed the party and mopping up the crazy spills. Great to meet a lot of new people too.

I also ended up with a couple extra chairs. Are they yours?

Some photos turned up and Jeremy posted a video of Amy throwing fire. Wee!

See you all soon; thanks for coming out!

Optimized for iPhone

I dropped in the WordPress iPhone Plug-in and Theme on this site. iPhone users, enjoy. It’s pretty darn slick. I made one code change that I think will make sense for many WordPress blogs, especially if you post from Flickr: on line 13 change the_excerpt so it reads: < ?php the_content(); ?> Thanks for the tips, Kyle.

UPDATE: The iPhone theme is too limiting in my opinion so I ended up removing it. Fun for a bit though. My next theme I plan to be pretty lightweight anyway.

Par Barred from the Strib, Offered Internship by The Daily Mole

As published by Minnesota Monitor, after Par Ridder was ordered out as the Star Tribune publisher, he was quickly offered an internship by former City Pages editor Steve Perry to work on his new local media startup, The Daily Mole:

Dear Par,

We at the Daily Mole were saddened to hear of your abrupt exit from the Newspaper of the Twin Cities this morning. We can only hope it spells an end to the scorn and mockery you have endured in your time of trial. People can be so judgmental. Especially judges.

As your friends have no doubt pointed out, sometimes the best thing one can do with such adversity is to turn the page. In that spirit, we want to be the first to offer you a chance at clearing the slate and earning back your good name. (And make no mistake: Ridder, under normal circumstances, is a very good name.)

We’re talking work. A job. And by “job,” I mean unpaid internship. If you will agree to sell advertising for the Daily Mole for a period of six months, gratis, we will pledge to consider hiring you full-time.

As a Daily Mole intern, your perks would include a desk (with chair), access to a telephone, and a whole box of business cards. You would need a laptop computer of your own, but we assume that’s not an issue.

Courage!

Best wishes,

The Mole People

Considering he’s on a year long vacation from the Star Tribune publisher position I think he should take it.

Weekend in Des Moines

Des Moines, Iowa, originally uploaded by s4xton.

Spent some time in Des Moines, Iowa for my cousin’s wedding. Had a bit of time to do some exploring and visited The Continental and The Locust Tap in Des Moines’ East Village neighborhood. Pleasantly cool area of town. If I was forced to live here that’s where you’d find me.

We stayed at the Embassy Suites Des Moines which had great breakfast and an “Evening Manager’s Reception” from 5:30-7:30pm which was a fully open bar to anyone showing a room key.

Room keys were also available for free in the lobby at the self-check-in kiosks. Parking was also free once word spread fast that the code to get into the lot was 1-5-0-0.

Overall a great time. Congrats to Bridget and Travis Monroe!

Last weekend I was sailing around the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore just outside of Bayfield, Wisconsin. Chartered a boat from Superior Charters who are nice people. View all the photos here. (slideshow)

Interview with Critical Mass Arrestee

This is this first full account from an arrestee that I’ve seen from someone that was arrested August 31st when Critical Mass went sour. Some of it is very interesting and doesn’t shed a very good light on the Minneapolis Police Department.

Immediately four officers pulled me down on my back, only my left hand was free. The officer who held my left leg was hitting it with a shock stick making my thigh muscles jump.

All four told me to stop resisting at which I joined the aforementioned chorus and said “I am not resisting officer, I am not.” I was then told to get on my stomach. I was hand cuffed and shaken around to which I kept repeating “I’m not resisting.”
