House, House

Amy and Casey’s New House, originally uploaded by s4xton.

I visited my sister and her fiancée’s new place today and dropped off a bunch of stuff that she had been storing in my basement and guest room. They now have a very cute corner house in North Saint Paul which is perfect for them to grow into. A nice back yard with lots of areas to garden, big rooms with a lot of flexibility and overall a living space with a lot of personality. I think they got a good deal and it’s a place that seems perfect for them. It’s very cool. I can’t wait to move more stuff to their place that’s sitting here at mine.

Which got me thinking again about my house and why I don’t really think I need most of these same things that Amy and Casey have.

It’s been bugging me for months.

I closed on my place in October 2004. I’ve had roommates for almost the entire time. Roommate Matt is moving out this next month and roommate Allen is moving by the end of September. I don’t plan on replacing either of them. This leaves me with much too much house and it doesn’t leave me with any disposable income either. Tie onto the fact that I have almost zero interest in home improvements, building a new garage, maintaining my gardens and keeping up a three bedroom house myself. It’s leading me to start searching for something smaller. Right now, I’m looking at condos primarily.

I love Longfellow, but I’m not attached enough to be set on staying here. I could see myself living in either downtown or a number of neighborhoods in Minneapolis or Saint Paul. In some ways I really miss my old 7th floor loft in Saint Paul. I came to Longfellow originally for the neighborhood, proximity to both downtowns and the easy commute. It is pretty darn good on all counts. When I lived in the Battle Creek neighborhood of Saint Paul (damn those photos bring back memories) I felt a little too far away. I’m looking around.

I don’t know what I’m going to do, really. Maybe I’ll find some way where I’ll realize staying here will work out a couple more years and I’ll get the motivation to redo my kitchen and paint that ugly spare bedroom I said I was going to do two years ago.

Flak Radio Episode 23

James Norton and Taylor Carik, originally uploaded by s4xton.

I was the guest host for Flak Radio’s Episode 23 where I gave James Norton and Taylor Carik the gift of DUO Brewing, chatted a bit about Twitter, Julio Ojeda-Zapada stalking my friends, my experience with Jon Gordon swearing over the phone, and how I gave up and settled for a “4″ in my URL. I exaggerate slightly.

Listen further to hear about the neutering of WKRP in Cincinnati, a very fair and humorous criticism on what American Movie Classics considers a “classic” and much more. It was a lot of fun and I’m glad they had me on.

A couple behind the scenes tidbits: It’s recorded in Uptown, Minneapolis. Jim Norton’s fiancée gave me a fantastic shot of Tequila before the show. There are two fantastic cats that are playful that aren’t allowed in the studio and they serve good beer over there.

Apotheosis of Washington

Apotheosis of Washington, originally uploaded by s4xton.

It’s hard to sum up a fantastic week in Washington. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a home away from home for me.

Wheaton Metrorail Station Escalator

Wheaton Metro Escalator, originally uploaded by s4xton.

Wheaton Metro Station has the longest escalator in the western hemisphere.

Thanks to Donika, Sara, Regan and Mike who have helped me tour around the last couple days off the beaten path and have given me places to sleep. See Mike’s and Regan’s posts too.

Good Neighbors

My next-door neighbor growing up, Sara Kloek now works for US Congressman Collin Peterson and my neighbor that used to live three blocks away from me, Tim Schumann, now works for US Senator Amy Klobuchar. Thanks to my old neighbors, I got a fantastic tour of the capital buildings.

Off to Washington

Snowy Trees, originally uploaded by s4xton.

Leaving snowy Minneapolis tomorrow for DC for a rather fun tour. Here’s the tentative plan so far:

Thursday: Pizzaria Paradiso with Donika. Yum.

Friday: Imee Cambronero’s party (I don’t actually know her but I guess she’s a US Congresswoman Betty McCollum staffer that’s moving back to Minnesota) at My Brother’s Place with Donika as well as Minnesotans Sara, Staff Assistant for US Congressman Collin Peterson and Jeannette, Staff Assistant (as of Monday) for US Senator Amy Klobuchar with a bunch of other Minnesotans. Point being, I need to brush up on current national politics. Afterwards, perhaps we’ll find ourselves at the Wonderland Ballroom.

Saturday: Driving somewhere with Sara. Evening, out and about with Regan, who I know through hiptop Nation but haven’t actually gotten around to meeting in person yet. Hopefully we’ll find some Strongbow.

Sunday: Probably some photography and whatnot at a TBD location (perhaps Adams Morgan? Old Town Alexandria? The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum?) with Mike. And maybe his family. And hopefully Regan too. It’ll be fantastic if it’s nice out.

Monday: Smithsonian with Sara and going to sleep early.

Tuesday: Early White House tour at 7:30am. Tuesday evening out with Ernie, Kim and James for debauchery, dirty jokes and low resolution photos.

Wednesday: TBD with Donika.

Thursday: Fly home.

I’ll be spending time with Donika and Sara in between and I’ll probably see a museum or exhibit or two as well. The weekdays during business hours I’ll have free and will be probably wandering alone. I’ve never done any of the touristy things in Washington before and I have a lot of recommendations of good places to visit. Anything I must see?

Danger Zante

Sample Photo from Danger Zante, originally uploaded by s4xton.

Browsing around Flickr I noticed that two Danger, Inc. employees (larf, Rubin 110) were posting photos that contained EXIF tags saying the device taking the photo was a “Danger Zante.” While various rumor sites and mobile device blogs have been speculating about a new device from Danger, there was almost zero evidence that one even existed.

I quickly inquired with my friend who runs hiptop3.com and he seemed really surprised that I knew anything about the Zante. He posted my findings and then within a few hours I’m on Gizmodo as “a bored Sidekick fan by the name of Aaron Landry.” Ha. I’m certainly not a Sidekick fan anymore and while they linked everything else they didn’t link my name to my site. I wasn’t really bored either. The story also showed up on übergizmo without any links at all. Silly.

UPDATE: Now also on EngadgetNow also on Mobile Guerilla.

Either way, the Danger employees promptly pulled the photos they leaked, but not before I nabbed two of them.

UPDATE: They asked me to remove them, and I complied.

So now we have two pieces of information about a forthcoming device from Danger, Inc.: It is currently named “Zante” and the camera sucks.

UPDATE: Danger employee obviously not happy with me (aka Internet Drama).

UPDATE: Danger employee removes photo of me from Flickr and immediately I get anonymous comments calling me out on “bullshit.” God bless the internets.
