What is happening to Minneapolis these days? Jeez.
Steve Marsh has some details on local restaurateur Thom Pham’s attack:
…broken eye socket, concussion, gashes and bruises on his face. [...] he was getting into his car when he was hit in the head with a brick. He managed to get away down an alley, and then one of the thugs hit him from behind with a 2×4.
UPDATE: Star Tribune posted a story.
UPDATE: After interviewing him, Jason DeRusha shared some details on MNspeak. One has to dig through the 150+ horrible comments to find it (I just removed MNspeak from my RSS reader, BTW):
TP left Temple, drove to Azia. Parked in the lot next to Anemone. Got out of car, got jumped, and whacked with a stick. Tried to make a run for it… blocked in my another van with a 2nd group of people. Running, trying to evade 6-8 people. Gets tackled. Dude goes to hit him with a brick, TP grabs his arm, slows it, so he doesn’t get slammed with brick, it just drops on his head.
Then someone drives by Nicollet, slows down after seeing the craziness, and the men scatter.

It’s that booming economy the media keeps telling me about.
Seriously, that’s too bad. I hope he’s OK.

He was so intoxicated according to one of his workers that he was driving in the wrong lane all the way to Azia where he fell out of car and created this so called incident where he was mobbed by all these Asian guys. I didn’t believe it myself until I heard from several people including his own employee’s. Pham was so embarassed what he had done that he created this story and threatened to fire anyone who had told of the events that transpired that evening. He used the incident for simpathy diners to his failing restaurant Temple. Ask around and you’ll find the truth.

As someone who knows where Thom Pham was that night, saw him after he got out of the hospital, and spends enough time with him on a regular basis to know his social habits quite well, I can attest that the above comment is what’s bullshit.
Normally I wouldn’t even respond to something so stupid, but I’m taking this opportunity to let anyone directed to this blog entry know that Thom is still being terrorized by an unknown assailant. His vehicles have been continuously vandalized and personal property stolen– as recently as Friday night, in fact, when Thom and I were on our way to a late dinner only to find that a window in his car had been shattered yet again.
I’m also good friends with a majority of Thom’s employees, particularly those with whom he socializes at the end of his 16-hour workdays. You can “ask around” all you want, but every one of them will tell you the truth that he’s a great boss and a generous friend who doesn’t deserve to be attacked, terrorized, or maliciously lied about via preposterous rumors posted in the comments of 4-month-old blog entries.
