UPDATE Sept 1: Steve Marsh was there and sums it up.
The one big thing I think people are really missing about this story is that this might be more about this than it is about Critical Mass. They, the bloggers and media are all giving CM a bad rap. I think this whole story might be more about the pReNC who decided to join up with CM this time around.
Check out Michelle Gross’ email after visiting those who were arrested.
UPDATE Sept 3: Well, maybe I was on the right track. Jason DeRusha writes:
Heather Brown is working on a story for our news at six, looking at the Republican Welcoming Committee group of anti-RNC protestors. Of all the 19 arrested, about half are connected to that protest group, not Critical Mass. Too bad for CM. It seems that some outsiders are tarnishing a group of people who love riding, and are out for a monthly good time.

This is definitely the angle that needs to be taken but I think it goes even beyond the RNC Welcoming Committee – we need to start looking at the ratcheting up of both rhetoric and actions by all sides (anarchists, state agencies, mainstream media, etc)…just started to explore this today. Thanks for the roundup.

Posted 03 Sep 2007 at 22:59 ¶This from an official press release by MPD and Tim Dolan:
” It appears that most of the actions of the officers were justified and reported appropriately. However, there are some actions that officers involved reported themselves that give me some concern. We also have to investigate all allegations by citizens. ”
and he ends it with this:
“The Minneapolis Police Department strongly supports citizens’ rights to free speech and assembly, and I will ensure that this incident and every complaint are fairly reviewed. However, I will not support intentional large scale disruption of traffic or assaults. Assaults on police will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
