Can I have custom ringtones for my phone as I am currently using 1.0.2 and itunes 7.5. I managed to follow the steps metioned to convert the mp3 into aac format and then coyping to the ringtones. Once I start to sync an error pops up saying that the format is not valid for the iphone. Anyone had luck in customising the ringtone using 1.0.2+itunes 7.5. Appreciate if you could share your tips.

It perplexes me that with all the apps Apple has that they can't cobble together a mobile iChat client and get iPhoto to sync up with iPhone, it works for the newer iPods. I guess that's why I never buy the first of something to come out.

Battery life is one of the biggest challenges in little electronic devices I deal with. Once they are put "into" use there is "growing" resistance to changing out a dead battery. Since battery improvements are almost flat compared to the demand huge efforts into creative methods to extend battery life are used. One method we use that may apply to the iPhone is compression. Transmissions take a huge amount of battery so to limit the amount and frequency of a transmission could save significant battery life.

Ellen-

That is mostly true. It works the same way iChat works: it puts a time stamp only on the beginning of a conversation but it will also add a time stamp if there has been a long duration between two messages (i.e. if someone texts you 6 hours later or something). I don't like this about iChat, but they've kept it that way for years. I don't think they'll change that on the iPhone. :-(

Another add...you can't view the times of individual texts if you haven't cleared a conversation you've been having with someone.

Agreed on the battery life hopefully so long as the battery can take repeated charges and one keeps it on a power source things should be okay. I would imagine that it will take a few years for battery technology to catch up with current technology power consumption requirements. Though I am not really current with most things tech related right now. I have some serious catchup to play.

Bone- We'll see. :-)

Ellen- I agree, that punctuation trick is slick. No clipboard yet, though.

Seth- I also agree. As Technology Evangelist and others have pointed out, there's some other larger looming issues too. Battery life will be a big one.

Aaron- great post on this. What makes me happy is that these are all relatively small fixes and not large critical failures that would not doubt be the case with other companies in the field. I love how apple keeps hitting grand slams and micro$oft keeps tripping. We are now exclusively an apple family and my wife is jonsing for an iPhone.

Aaron,

All great points but, remember Leopard was supposed to be released in June too.

Wait and see. October should be an early Christmas for iPhone owners.

Great writeup! A couple obscure tips I read somewhere:

For #5 - double tap the Safari menu bar and the web page will auto scroll back to the top to show the URL no matter how deep the page.

For #10 - to get frequently needed punctuation like the period and @, just press and hold the symbols key and slide your finger to the symbol you want. When you release your finger, the alphabet keyboard returns.

7. Foreign characters. Am I the only one that spells naïve and fiancée?

The predictive text while typing should automatically fix naive and fiancee to be spelled "properly". You are the only person I know that cares that much about spelling them "correctly". In fact, Firefox is reporting that naive is correct and "naïve" isn't whereas it says that fiancee is incorrect and "fiancée" is.

Weird.
