Not long ago I saw my neighbor Troy and a roommate of his setting up holiday decorations. I yelled across the street, “you guys aren’t f***ing around this year, are ya?”
I had no idea what I was in for. The next few days the lights were in a horribly annoying pattern going directly into my bedroom window. I never understood why people would put lights in such rapidly flashing patterns. This weekend a car was parked outside my house blocking traffic and I pulled up to them and asked how they were as it seemed suspicious. They were clearly enjoying themselves and they told me to tune to 97.9 FM.
LOL so the neighbors have it all set to music!
A few days later they put a sign in the yard with the station and now we are getting a ton of traffic. Even my cat Minnie likes watching it. They add new songs now and then. Visit it at 32nd St E and 41st Ave S in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis or if you can’t make it out, the YouTube Video can give you a rough idea.
Update (13 Dec 06): My Neighbor’s Lights were on WCCO (video).

It looks like you live across the street from the electric version of the Bellagio fountain in Las Vegas!

Posted 04 Dec 2006 at 20:05 ¶Moe- I just talked with Troy next door and he said that a lot of the hardware and sequencing equipment used as what “that guy that was all over the internet last year” used: d-light.us.
That, and it’s in our neighborhood!
Posted 04 Dec 2006 at 20:15 ¶I have a lot of respect for this. And for putting it on YouTube.
Posted 04 Dec 2006 at 20:59 ¶Is that the ghost of Christmas Past Freddie Mercury walking throught the shot about 3/4 of the way through?
Posted 04 Dec 2006 at 21:11 ¶Awesome stuff, Aaron. Thanks for the heads up, Taylor.
Posted 04 Dec 2006 at 22:07 ¶God Bless America!
I don’t know how much one of these setups cost but one thing is for sure: I’d rather buy a turbo for my VW…
P.S.:
Posted 05 Dec 2006 at 09:19 ¶I wonder how these lights will react to trance music?
Fancy looking display, but what’s he going to do about the lights on the ground when we get a decent snow fall?
Posted 05 Dec 2006 at 13:22 ¶s4xton - You need to hack into their system and add some of your own songs - Maybe Snow Miser or even Du Hast!
Posted 05 Dec 2006 at 15:03 ¶Im sorry its causing you trouble i dont understand why people put those stupid things up, it just causes annyances…oi maybe they should think of how it affects other people before they do it…. its just flashy and stupid.
yes a few lights and a tree is fine but some of that stuff is stupid, id rather spend money on something else, maybe more useful.
Posted 05 Dec 2006 at 19:12 ¶I’m not really sure what to think. It definitely looks like it must have taken some time. It would be fun to see once, I kind of feel sorry for you that you don’t have the option of walking away from it.

Posted 05 Dec 2006 at 20:54 ¶I know fear. The holiday spirit just might kill me this year.
Posted 06 Dec 2006 at 20:37 ¶NOW I’m in the holiday spirit! Thanks.
How do they broadcast on FM? I’ve seen realtors broadcast out to the street too. Anyone know what they use? Thanks
Posted 07 Dec 2006 at 12:32 ¶smythe- He showed it to me on Monday. It’s just using a low-power FM Transmitter. Similar to this one.
Posted 07 Dec 2006 at 15:13 ¶AWESOME, i’d like to meet them so i can do that to my family’s house or my bedroom.
Posted 09 Dec 2006 at 21:49 ¶At first I thought they were blasting the neighborhood with the music and that you could hear it all night, and I thought “It’s bazooka time” but now I realize that you just need blackout curtains for your bedroom until January.
Posted 12 Dec 2006 at 13:52 ¶Dude! You’re on TV!
Posted 14 Dec 2006 at 00:06 ¶Do they have a show again this year? if so is it the same radio station?

[...] But then I ran across thisĀ – decorative holiday house lights set to music — and I was filled with a sensation that can only be described as Pure Christmas Love ‘n Peace. [...]
[...] Aaron Landry blogged about this a while back, and I finally got around to checking it out last night. A house at 41st Ave S & 32nd St E has Christmas lights choreographed to Christmas songs. They have an FM station set up for visitors to tune in the music rather than forcing their neighbors to put up with the tunes. Here is 30 seconds taken on my Treo from the car:[...]
